Nederlandse Frees Maatschappij B.V. – Modifications to the milling machine to remove dust and quartz from the breathing zone of the machinist

A lot of dust and quartz is released when milling asphalt on the road surface. Exposure to dust and quartz can cause a variety of illnesses. As a solution to this the Nederlandse Frees Maatschappij has modified the milling machine. The milling box has been made air tight and air is extracted from the milling box. The percentage of dust and quartz in the breathing zone of the machinist of the milling machine can therefore be reduced. In addition, the people working in the vicinity of the milling machine are less exposed to dust and quartz. In this way Frees Maatschappij has considerably improved the working conditions for a number of workers in a very practical manner.
Shared second prize and public prize (2x 2500 euros):
Stichting Leerplanontwikkeling Enschede [Curriculum Development Foundation Enschede] – Integration of safety, health and welfare in construction technology education

De The work environment in the construction industry frequently involves major risks, particularly if the people walking round are not sufficiently familiar with the dangers of the work environment. The Curriculum Development Foundation therefore concluded that it is important in pre-vocational secondary education to teach students to perform tasks in a safe manner. Moreover, the Foundation considers it important that students develop a positive work attitude to health and welfare. A new teaching format has been developed for this, the ‘Leerwerkhuis’ for construction technology. By simulating a company in the ‘leerwerkhuis’, real-life situations are provided that resemble the reality at work as much as possible. In this way future employees in the construction industry are already made aware of safety, health and welfare whilst they are in secondary education. You can’t start early enough!
Shared second prize (2500 euros):
Aan de Stegge – Reduce work pressure and stress for the foreman by increasing influence and responsibility
![]() | |
Communication between foreman and designers is unfortunately often poor. At construction firm Aan de Stegge in Roosendaal this was also found to have a negative impact. There were a lot of communication problems between execution, design and project management. Foremen often had to work with incomplete information or information not relevant for the execution. This resulted in extra work pressure and frustration. To solve this a lot of attention has been paid to improve communication and coordination within the organisation. And with results! The work pressure has been reduced enormously and projects are executed more efficiently.
