The European Week Working on Stress concluded on 25 November with a European summit on Working with Stress in Bilbao, Spain. The prize winners of the European Good Practice Award were announced at this conference. The Dutch entries by Dow Benelux and Sector Fondsen Zorg en Welzijn win the European Good Practice Award. In total 15 entries received the Good Practice Award on 25 November 2002 at the Guggenheim museum.

Dow Benelux BV wins European Good Practice Award 2002:
'Welfare-stress prevention programme works’

An impressive and thorough approach to welfare and stress in the organisation by an internal occupational health and safety service. In fact a programme for modern human resource management with a good eye for stress prevention. The programme applies to all levels in the organisation and is discussed thoroughly with the management each year. Clear information is provided on work stress and proposals made for an approach to the problem. Striking results have been achieved in reducing the level of absenteeism due to illness (from 8% to 3 %). The integrated approach of this internal occupational health and safety service is informative for a sector or industry approach in small and medium sized companies.

Sector Fondsen Zorg en Welzijn win European Good Practice Award 2002: Programme for a safer hospital: Safe Care

This programme aims to reduce aggression and violence in hospitals. Trials were carried out at the Westfries Gasthuis in Hoorn and good results were achieved (30% reduction in physical violence and 27% reduction in verbal abuse). This approach contains many original ideas such as the involvement of the police in direct employee consultation on work, a permanent news trailer that keeps visitors informed of sudden events, stickers and cards that inform visitors in several languages of the fact that aggression will not be tolerated. Nine pilots are to be started in other hospitals shortly. Small and medium-sized companies can learn from the cooperation with other professionals (e.g. the police).

Dutch prize winners BGZ Wegvervoer; Campaign ‘Stress. Don’t be afraid to admit it’
Excellent awareness campaign aimed at the target group with the focus on stress (a soft subject in road transport). With use of clear illustrations, competitions, interviews, etc. Complies with all set criteria. Suitable for small and medium-sized businesses.

Stichting Vervangingsfonds en Bedrijfsgezondheidszorg voor het Onderwijs (Foundation for Replacement Fund and Company Health Care in Education); Stress prevention project: individual and team-based advice on coping with stress for primary and secondary education
Based on a detailed questionnaire (274 questions) information was obtained on work experience, health and welfare, coping with stress and lifestyles. After return of the questionnaire a comparison was made with a reference file. Personal and team advice was given on a large scale. Use was made here, among other things, of a very user-friendly ‘Self-help guide coping with stress’ (which, for example, gives information on individual performance; teaches techniques for putting things into perspective and cooperating with others). The information can also be used in other organisations and also in small and medium-sized companies.

FNV Bondgenoten; ‘Quick Scan for Work Pressure’
A tool to measure work pressure that can be applied in almost all sectors and is also suitable for small and medium-sized companies. Useful in particular for employee participation or works councils to provide clear information on work pressure for groups of employees and to make it the subject of discussion in organisations on a broad front (with employers and the employees concerned) (there is a reference file). The instrument presents causes and results and offers possible solutions. Scientifically proven instrument (version 3). Union awarded for Quick Scan Work Pressure.
