Young workers – European Campaign for Safety and Health at Work 2006
This year’s European Week for Safety and Health at Work Work is dedicated to young people to ensure a safe and healthy start to their working lives.
The Safe Start campaign is backed by all Member States, candidate and EFTA countries, the Austria and Finland EU Presidencies, the European Parliament and the European Commission, and by the European Social Partners.
A bad start to working life:
Young workers are involved in 50% more occupational accidents than their older counterparts. The number of occupational accidents is constantly increasing, resulting in the tragic destruction of young lives.
Possible ways of preventing these accidents are:
- educating children to be "risk-wise",
- including safety and health in education and training,
- taking into account young workers' lack of physical and mental maturity and
- providing tuition and supervision at work.
The campaign is intended to help young people get off to a good start at work:
The aims are to
- make children and young people more "risk-wise",
- increase young people's awareness of safety and health aspects at work,
- promote good working conditions for young people by ensuring safe and healthy workplaces and practices,
- support networking and information exchange between all stakeholders and to
- support the European Youth Pact for employment, education and training.
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work invites nominations for the seventh European Good Practice Awards in occupational health and safety.
